Hamamatsu, Japan ― Yamaha Corporation has won three Good Design Awards 2025 from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, for the TORCH T01 digital piano, the Extrack app for musicians, and the packaging design of its entry-level wind instruments. Yamaha also won the Good Design Long Life Award for its Clavinova CLP series digital pianos. This award recognizes designs that have been widely appreciated for their functionality and value over many years, and are expected to continue demonstrating those qualities into the future.

“As the scope of design continues to expand and societal values evolve, receiving the Good Design Award for more than 40 consecutive years has been a constant source of encouragement in our daily work,” said Manabu Kawada, senior general manager of Yamaha Design Laboratory. “This year, we are especially honored that in our core product category of digital pianos, the Clavinova CLP series received the Long Life Design Award. The TORCH T01, which represents our challenge to create new value, was recognized alongside it, and we were also awarded in different categories such as music apps and packaging design. We are truly delighted that our multifaceted efforts have been acknowledged.”

Yamaha designs have won Good Design Awards for 42 consecutive years since 1984, including the 2017 Grand Award for its casual wind instrument, Venova™. All of these award-winning designs embody the Yamaha design philosophy, sharing its fundamental qualities: designs should have Integrity, should be Innovative, Aesthetic, and Unobtrusive, and should show a commitment to Social Responsibility.

TORCH T01 Digital Piano

This digital piano features striking black keys made from the precious wood material, African Blackwood, that is typically used in wind instruments like clarinets―specifically, the portions that are left unused after the careful selection and crafting process.

Yamaha is engaged in an activity called "Otonomori*" to ensure that precious wood materials can continue to be used in future instrument manufacturing, and the TORCH T01 is a new concept model born from this challenge to pursue more sustainable manufacturing. Centered around the theme of African Blackwood, the piano is crafted to evoke a warm presence and tactile feel, with hand-finished details by artisans―inviting players to build a lasting connection and continue playing the instrument for years to come.

In consideration of the environment, Yamaha has avoided the use of the commonly-used PVC sheets for the exterior, with it instead featuring a hand-applied natural oil finish that highlights the wood's unique character and texture. Additionally, Yamaha's proprietary laser processing was used to recreate the natural patterns present in African Blackwood bark.

The TORCH T01 was selected for the "My Favorite Design 2025" category in the Good Design Awards 2025.

Extrack App for Musicians

This is an iOS/Android app that lets users practice or jam along with their favorite songs, making them feel as if they are playing alongside the real artists. The app allows users to adjust the volume of each instrument part as the song is played, displays chord progressions, and supports tempo and key changes. It addresses common challenges faced by musicians, such as the monotony of solo practice or the difficulty of practicing casually with others, allowing beginners and professionals alike to have more fun playing their instruments.

The colors and controls of the interface have been thoughtfully designed to make these convenient features fun and intuitive to use while playing, even for those unfamiliar with music apps.

Packaging for Entry-Level Wind Instrument Models

Yamaha redesigned and renewed the packaging for its entry-level wind instruments in 2025, for the first time in 16 years.

Building on its efforts toward sustainability and reducing environmental impact, Yamaha redesigned the packaging not merely as a container, but as an important tool for conveying the product's value and appeal to customers, with a design that is both sophisticated and easily recognizable. Instrument designers worked closely with the designers to refine every detail, from the feel of the packaging to the internal partitions, to bring the new packaging design to life.

The four outer panels feature a softly blurred depiction of the instrument, as though it were enclosed in a translucent acrylic case, heightening the anticipation before the box is opened, and the excitement of when the instrument is held for the first time.
